The 2009 Inter City Competition - by David

10/8/2009

Tuesday 4 August saw the 2009 Inter City Competition, fought out between the Glasgow, Edinburgh and Dundee District Angling Clubs Federations.  Glasgow's 12 man team was drawn from 11 different Glasgow area clubs, with the B&B providing 2 anglers for the team, in Paul and David.  36 anglers took to water, with me paired with Ian Campbell, representing Dundee, and Paul with an Edinburgh angler.  I had fished the Lake on the previous Sunday with my RAF mate Al Gamble, so knew there were lots of fish in Gateside Bay.  However, my BP had other ideas and took me to drift onto the plantation shore.  I was broken with a hard take after 10 mins or so, and by the time I was retackled, Ian had landed a couple of fish on an international rules sized YD booby.  Cue a bit of banter from me about catching fish on a proper fly, reinforced as I took a couple of fish on a cruncher and a green DB.  I went on to take fish regularly, and took my 5th just befor 12 noon, with 2 being on the cruncher, one on the DB, one on a silver bodied cormorant and the last one on a white cat booby (shame!).  Paul meanwhile was stuck on 2, fishing in exactly the same area and with the same set up as me - you can't explain these things.

My BP eventually got his limit at 2pm, and we went for a wee tour.  There were obviously lots of fish being caught, a good number on dries, but it was considerably more difficult in the afternoon than it had been in the morning.  As the boats arrived on the shore and the count began it look ed as if it was going to be pretty tight.  After a faf with the scales - not zeroed! - the result cleared, with Dundee firmly in 3rd place with 37 fish.  Edinburgh and Glasgow had each caught 46 fish, but Glasgow triumphed by 7lbs, 111lbs to Edinburgh's 104lbs.  There were 17 limits, and Paul and David contibuted 8 fish to the Glasgow total - better than the rod average.  A great day's fishing was completed with a surprisingly good meal at the Lake Hotel, where thanks were recorded to the organisers, Alastair, Sandy and Ronnie, for Glasgow, Dundee and Edinburgh respectively.  The Lake fished remarkable well for early August - well done Quint and Douglas, and we hope it continues on 20 Aug 09.
