Black Loch - 24 September 2016
It was a pretty wild day at the Black Loch and it seems that the bravest reaped the rewards. The day saw a straight shootout for the Club Championship between Paul and Jackie, who were fishing together. The simple arithmetic mean that if Paul beat Jackie, then Paul would win the Club Championship - if Jackie beat Paul then it was all going to be decided by how far ahead Jackie finished. Our guest for the day, Raymond, was into a fish almost first cast - under the high bank. Little did he and boat partner David know that that was going to be it for them for the day! Ian and Barrie had a fish each in the morning, but the usual 'lunch bunch' had very little to report at 1pm. Paul picked up a fish around 2pm to take a firm advantage, but, as we know, the championship has gone down to the last half hour in the past. And so it happened - Jackie landed a fish just before the finish time, and if there was a pod he (or Paul) might have had a chance of another - not to be. Six was going to matter. Meanwhile, Robin was accumulating down in the wind off the heather bank, compiling an excellent bag of 4 fish, comfortably winning the day. The rest of the results are as follows:
1st Robin B 4 Fish 8 lb 12 oz 10 points 2nd Ian G 2 Fish 4 lb 12 oz 9 points 3rd Barrie D 2 Fish 4 lb 06.5 oz 8 points 4th Alastair S 2 Fish 3 lb 10 oz 7 points 5th Alex G 1 Fish 2 lb 03 oz 6 points 6th= Jackie N 1 Fish 2 lb 01.5 oz 4.5 points 6th= Paul W 1 Fish 2 lb 01.5 oz 4.5 points
So the shootout ended up as a tie! This means that Paul W wins the 2016 Club Championship with 60.5 points, exactly one point ahead of Jackie N. Many congrats to both anglers - great season. Robin took the plaudits on the day, with Ian and Barrie doing very well, too. It was an interesting, if challenging end to the season!
14 rods caught 13 fish for a total weight of 27lb - just over 2lb per fish. I've no idea what the successful method was - ask Robin at the AGM!
Loch Leven - 27 August 2016
The Loch Leven competition was fished in difficult conditions (as usual) and, as become the habit, the trout did not cooperate at all. Nil point! Therefore, no change to the Club Championship table.
Lake of Menteith - 11 August 2016
Here are the results from the Lake:
1st Paul W 4 Fish 12 lb 08 oz 10 points 2nd Tom C 4 Fish 9 lb 04 oz 9 points 3rd Keith J 4 Fish 9 lb 02 oz 8 points 4th John G 4 Fish 8 lb 14 oz 7 points 5th Laurie T 4 Fish 8 lb 05 oz 6 points 6th Tom B 4 Fish 8 lb 00 oz 5 points 7th Robin B 4 Fish 7 lb 05 oz 4 points 8th Bobby R 3 Fish 7 lb 02 oz 3 points 9th Barrie D 3 Fish 6 lb 04 oz 2 points 10th Sam F 2 Fish 6 lb 00 oz 1 point
Paul reports: We caught LOM on a good day with fish being taken all over the top end - from Gateside Bay, to the Malling Shore and the Heronry. Successful flies were boobies and cormorants in the morning, with dries coming on strong in the afternoon. I was lucky enough to get a first fish of 4lb 14oz and later 1 over 3lb, bagged up by 1130. BP Tom also had his limit by early pm. My set up was fast glass, 4 files, 2 fabs with red holo and green holo corms in between.
Well done to everyone.

Lake of Menteith - 5 May 2016
So much to report, so little time... I'm not sure those who ventured out early benefitted much. Anyway, the bulk of the club members present left the beach on or after 9.30 and started to scratch their heads in puzzlement almost immediately. Apart from Willie and Jackie that is, who just got on with the nasty business of catching fish. Most of the boats were in the Butts, Tod Hole, Lochend area, where there seemed to be lots of fish, but we now know that they were interested only in Willie's green buzzer and Jackie's tiny black booby. Laurie and David struggled, Robert picked up a fish early, then struggled, Gilbert and Sam didn't seem to be having an action packed time and meanwhile in Gateside Bay.... Sydney was putting us all to shame. Yup, Sydney was sorting out a large, overwintered rainbow trout which took, according to boat-partner Paul, 20 minutes or so to get to the net. The fine fish weighed in at 5lb and 6 oz - very well done, Sydney, but what did you do for the rest of the day? Lunch time came all too quickly, with Laurie using the time that David was in the shed with the rest of the lunch revellers most profitably - by failing to add to his morning trout total. All this after the dynamic duo had tried and failed to get a stray lamb back into the field with the rest of its cousins. Amazing what happens at a B&B competition - sheep rustling scenes! The afternoon saw something of an upturn in fortunes with a few more fish being caught and Robert and Alex managing to run aground, lose something overboard (which had to be netted), fail to start the engine, catch a tree and break a rod all at the same time! Exemplary, and thanks of the entertainment. (Thanks also to guest Sam, who helped out - Laurie and David didn't, being unable to stop laughing. Guys, if you are going to do something like that, make sure 'the scribe' is not watching on.) And so to the results:
1st Tom C 4 Fish 8 lb 09 oz 10 points 2nd Jackie 4 Fish 8 lb 06 oz 9 points 3rd David O 4 Fish 8 lb 03 oz 8 points 4th Willie E 4 Fish 7 lb 08 oz 7 points 5th Barrie 4 Fish 6 lb 08 oz 6 points 6th John G 3 Fish 6 lb 00 oz 5 points 7th Tom B 3 Fish 5 lb 08 oz 4 points 8th Laurie T 3 Fish 5 lb 07 oz 3 points 9th Sydney 1 Fish 5 lb 06 oz 2 points 10th Paul W 2 Fish 5 lb 02 oz 1 point
Black Loch - 23 April 2016
Not many details about this outing as your usual scribe was otherwise engaged. I hear the dam was a bit windy, but otherwise the conditions were pretty typical for a fishery perched on top of Scotland's central belt. The results were: 1st Paul W 5 Fish 10 lb 15oz 10 points 2nd Jackie N 5 Fish 10 lb 01 oz 9 points 3rd Barrie D 5 Fish 9 lb 14 oz 8 points 4th John G 5 Fish 9 lb 11 oz 7 points 5th Laurie T 5 Fish 9 lb 10 oz 6 points 6th Tom C 3 Fish 5 lb 10 oz 5 points 7th Tom B 3 Fish 5 lb 02 oz 4 points 8th Sam F 2 Fish 5 lb 00 oz 3 points 9th Alastair S 1 Fish 2 lb 02 oz 2 points 10th Gilbert O 1 Fish 2 lb 01 oz 1 point
Frandy Fishery - 9 April 2016
An other interesting, if very cold, day's fishing. Paul was the main man in the morning, getting off to a flier with his Di3 and a fly that is usually spoken of in hushed tones. The fish were actually pretty well spread out, which made for challenging angling, and, if I'm honest and despite my own (non) result, a much better day's fishing than sitting over a pod of fish. As ever, a variety of flies took fish, from the traditionals to the junk food. Here are the results:
1st Paul W 5 Fish 12 lb 07oz 10 points 2nd Jackie N 5 Fish 11 lb 10 oz 9 points 3rd Barrie D 5 Fish 11 lb 04 oz 8 points 4th Laurie T 5 Fish 11 lb 00 oz 7 points 5th Alex G 4 Fish 10 lb 08 oz 6 points 6th Willie E 3 Fish 8 lb 08 oz 5 points 7th Bill M 3 Fish 6 lb 04 oz 4 points 8th Robin B 2 Fish 5 lb 08 oz 3 points 9th Ian G 1 Fish 4 lb 04 oz 2 points 10th John G 1 Fish 3 lb 08 oz 1 point
Lake of Menteith - 26 March 2016
Well, that was a bit wet, wasn't it? Did I mention that it rained a bit? In the end, after much pre-match drama, 14 intrepid (translation: totally mad) anglers decided to actually fish. The sensible ones were Gilbert, Sydney, Alex, David P and Sam, while Robin can have our best wishes for a speedy recovery. As for the Hon Sec, well, Tom, we wish you a speedy recovery, too. We were delighted to welcome Kevin, fishing a s a guest, who did very well indeed, and if he had been a member of the club would have taken 3rd place on the day with his 4 fish.
The fishing was actually steady. Fish were found in a variety of locations around the Lake, from Lochend, to International Bay, Armnach point and the rookery. The usual variety of methods worked, with fish being high in the water and succumbing to buzzers, DBs, crunchers, junk food and traditionals. The full results are:
1st Keith J 4 Fish 9 lb 13 oz 10 points 2nd Bill M 4 Fish 9 lb 00 oz 9 points 3rd Willie E 4 Fish 8 lb 09 oz 8 points 4th John G 4 Fish 8 lb 08 oz 7 points 5th Ian G 4 Fish 8 lb 06 oz 6 points 6th Barrie D 4 Fish 8 lb 00 oz 5 points 7th= Tom C 4 Fish 7 lb 14 oz 3.5 points 7th= David O 4 Fish 7 lb 14 oz 3.5 points 9th Paul W 4 Fish 7 lb 10 oz 2 points 10th Bobby R 3 Fish 5 lb 04 oz 1 point
In total, we weighed in 47 fish for a rod average of around 3.36, and a total weight of approx 98 lb 6 oz , giving an average weight per fish of around 2 lb and 2 oz. We returned a number of fish - around 12, I would guess. Well done to all who partook, best wishes to the sickies and we look forward to better weather at Frandy on 9 Apr.
